Stanley Steam Car

Stanley Steam Car Model 85

The American Stanley Motor Carriage Company, owned by two brothers, operated at a factory in Newton, Massachusetts from 1902-1924.

This particular model, built in 1910, was imported to Britain from Nashville Tennessee.

The cars were constructed of a light wooden body mounted on tubular steel frames by means of full elliptic springs. The steam engine is an external combustion engine - steam was generated in a vertical fire-tube boiler mounted beneath the seat, with a vaporizing gasoline/kerosene burner underneath.

Known colloqually as “Stanley Steamers”, the rapid development of the internal combustion engine in the 1900s lead to their commercial demise.
